The 2011 Spring meeting will be on Thursday, May 12 at 5:30 pm at the Dilworth Neighborhood Grille.

Our speaker will be Michael J Arena, PhD

Talk Title: "Honest Signals - Hard Measures of Social and Human Behavior"

Dr. Arena is a professor at Queens University and has more than 20 years of experience in driving strategic change and innovation. He specializes in the intersection of human behavior, innovation and connectivity.

Prior to this role, Dr. Arena served as senior vice president of leadership development for Bank of America's Global Consumer and Small Business Banking group, where he was responsible for such areas as talent management, executive development, performance management and organizational effectiveness.

In this session, Dr. Arena will present the outcomes of a study  that used specially designed digital sensors or "sociometers", to monitor and analyze patterns of signaling among groups of people in a call center, along with additional ground breaking work from MIT's Media Lab and Sandy Pentland's book Honest Signals.

Prior Meetings

Winter 2011. Date: January 27, 2011. Location: Dilworth Neighborhood Grille, Charlotte, N.C.  The meeting consisted of social networking and a talk given by our guest speaker, John Kello Ph.D., professor, researcher and consultant, who spoke on "Selling Psychology: Successful Organizational Consulting from a Behavioral Science Base". Our contributing sponsor was Strategic Management Decisions, LLC (SMD), a provider of human capital services.

Summer 2010. Date:  June 9, 2010. Location: Dilworth Neighborhood Grille, Charlotte, N.C.  The meeting consisted of social networking and a talk given by Tim Nohr, M.B.A., J.D. on legal implications of recent cases (view case one, view case two) with a roundtable discussion. Our contributing sponsor was the Organizational Science Consulting and Research Unit at UNC Charlotte.

Fall 2009. Date: Oct. 15, 2009. Location: Dilworth Neighborhood Grille, Charlotte, N.C. This event featured socializing, networking, and a talk by Jerry Hedge, Ph.D., a senior research manager within the social and statistical sciences group of RTI International. Hedge's talk (view presentation) was titled, "What an Aging Workforce Means for Workers, Organizations, and I/O Researchers." This event's contributing sponsor was Right Management.

Spring 2009. Date: April 23, 2009. Location: Dilworth Neighborhood Grille, Charlotte, N.C. After socializing and networking, attendees enjoyed an introductory talk by Michael Moomaw, Ph.D., who serves as southern regional director at Applied Psychological Techniques (APT) Inc. Following Moomaw's talk, guests engaged in roundtable discussions on topics of interest.  The structure of the meeting was designed in response to survey feedback, which indicated that group members are interested in the group facilitating ways for members to get to know each other better through a semi-structured networking opportunity. Topics for the roundtable discussions were determined the night of the event based upon attendee interest. The contributing sponsor for this event was APT.

Winter 2009. Date: Feb. 5, 2009. Location: Dilworth Neighborhood Grille, Charlotte, N.C. This event was conducted jointly with the North Carolina Industrial and Organizational Psychologists. Under the theme of mergers and acquisitions, members and guests enjoyed presentations by two highly accomplished and experienced speakers. First, Michael Hitt, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor, Joe B. Foster Chair in Business Leadership, C.W. and Dorothy Conn Chair in New Ventures at Texas A&M University, discussed mergers and acquisitions from a research perspective (view presentation). In the second session, Julio Manso, who is senior vice president for leadership development, global card services, at Bank of America, discussed how Bank of America approaches mergers and acquisitions from a talent-management perspective. Fall 2008. Date: Oct. 7, 2008. Location: Dilworth Neighborhood Grille, Charlotte, N.C. Guest speaker: Nancy Tippins, Ph.D., senior vice president and managing principal,

Spring 2008. Date: May 21, 2008. Location: Dilworth Neighborhood Grille, Charlotte, N.C. Guest speakers: Rodney Warrenfeltz, Ph.D., managing partner, Hogan Assessment Systems; Shane Douthitt, Ph.D.,  senior vice president, and Scott Mondore, Ph.D., senior client consultant, Morehead Associates.
